Europa League Final 2018

Last Wednesday night saw Marseille take on Atletico Madrid in Lyon for the Europa League trophy. It was Marseille’s first European cup final since 2004 when they appeared in the UEFA Cup final but they haven’t won a European competition since they won the Champions League in 1993, while Atletico Madrid were in their third Europa League final in eight years.

Things didn’t get off to the best of starts for Marseille as Atletico scored in the 21st minute thanks to their start player Antoine Griezmann, things got even worse for Marseille not long after as their own star player Dimitri Payet was taken off injured in the 32nd minute.

After Payet went off Marseille never really looked like they would get back into the game, the first half ended 1-0 to Atletico but right after the restart Atletico finished off the game thanks to another goal by Griezmann. This final will probably be remembered for his performance and just how good a player he is and if it is to be his last game for Atletico it was some way to go out.

The game stayed at 2-0 right up until the 89th minute when the Atletico captain Gabi popped up for the third goal and a nice way to end the final with the team captain scoring the final goal. The showed just how consistent Atletico have been over the last few years, whether it has been reaching the Champions League final or winning the Europa League Atletico have proved that they are one of the best teams in Europe.

It was a sad night for Marseille as they lost the final and also the added disappointment that the final was played in France, but they have shown that they are a good team who will be in the Europa League next year again and could be considered as one of the favourites for next year’s tournament.

The Europa League final also saw the last game at Atletico for Fernando Torres, after starting his career at Atletico moving to England and then italy it was great to see Torres back in an Atletico shirt and the move helped rebuild his reputation after an awful spell at Chelsea. Where Torres goes after this season who knows but he will always be fondly remembered by the Atletico fans.
