After twelve games in a thirty-three league season Cork City look like they are running away with the league title already.
Having won all twelve of their league games so far Cork City are 14 points clear of their closest challengers Bray Wanderers. Even Dundalk who were so good last season are 15 points behind Cork and don’t look anything like the team they were last season. Not only do Cork have a superior points difference, they also have an amazing goal difference as well of 28. The second best goal difference after Cork’s is Dundalk’s at 8, this shows just how good Cork have been this season with loads of goals and a fantastic defence.
Cork’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed nor has the form of their star man this season Sean Maguire, who has scored 11 goals so far this season and is joint top goalscorer with Bray’s Gary McCabe. Maguire has had interest from both Glasgow Celtic and Preston North End so far, and if the money is good Cork might be tempted to sell in the summer. More teams could also become interested in Maguire before the summer transfer window comes around, but with Maguire so well at the moment he might want to stay and continue that form and maybe even achieve or surpass what Dundalk did last season.
Maguire will have a lot of options this summer and I am sure he will be looking at how quickly Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle settled into the Preston squad after leaving Dundalk. It might appeal to him that Preston North End would be the right club for him, but it might also appeal to him that Horgan and Boyle achieved so much with Dundalk before making the move, that staying with Cork and achieving something big would be the best for his career.
Cork have done fantastically so far this season and will be hoping to keep this form up until the summer, when they will be playing the Europa League Qualifiers.
