After the first legs of the Champions League we didn’t believe that we were going to be in for more goals and more surprises, but that is exactly what we got.
The biggest shock of the round had to be Barcelona’s game against Paris Saint Germain, when Barca came from 4-0 in the first leg to win 6-1 in the second leg and make it through to the quarter finals. It was the first time a team has ever come from four goals down in the first leg to then go on and win the tie.
Arsenal lost Bayern Munich by five goals to one for the second leg in a row, meaning that they lost 10-2 on aggregate which is one of their biggest ever defeats on aggregate in Europe.
The second biggest scoring games of the Champions League was Manchester City v AS Monaco, Man City won 5-3 in the first leg at home. They need to keep it tight in the second leg and probably score a few goals, but they ended up losing 3-1 meaning that they got knocked out of the Champions League. It means the first time in his managerial career that Pep Guardiola has not reached at least the semi finals in the Champions League.
There is only one English team left in the Champions league thanks to Leicester City’s comeback against Sevilla, having lost the first leg 2-1 Leicester went on to win the second leg 2-0 at home. After sacking Claudio Ranieri when they lost the first leg, Leicester will feel like their decision was justified having now reached the Champion League quarter final stages.
The other teams to reach the quarter finals were Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund. The quarter final draw was also made and the fixtures are as follows:
Real Madrid v Bayern Munich
Juventus v Barcelona
Borussia Dortmund v AS Monaco
Leicester City v Atletico Madrid
There are some amazing looking quarter final games there and it looks like another exciting round of football in the Champions League.
