Cork Ruin Dundalk’s Day

Dundalk have had one of the best seasons an Irish team has ever had, having won the league and also qualifying for the Europa League while having a great chance of qualifying from their group.

Cork City beat Dundalk on Sunday to win the FAI Cup and stop Dundalk winning the double for the second year in a row. This has just been a blip on an other wise fantastic season for Dundalk. Having qualified for the Europa League group stages Dundalk actually have a fantastic chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Dundalk’s success hasn’t gone unnoticed and this week Andy Boyle and Daryl Horgan were called up to the Irish senior squad to play Austria in a World Cup qualifier. Many players who have gone on to play for Ireland have normally had their move to England or elsewhere before they get a call up. But for two players playing in Ireland to get called up to the senior squad it is a massive boost for the league and the players playing in it.

Surely it will only be a matter of time for some of these Dundalk players to move aboard but in the mean time, Dundalk have shown what the League of Ireland is all about and that there are fantastic players who play in Ireland.
