After getting Ireland’s first ever point in a European club competition Dundalk have gone and got Ireland’s first ever win in a European group stage of a club competition.
Dundalk beat Israeli side Maccabi Tel-Aviv 1-0 at Tallaght Stadium on Thursday night to claim their first win in the Europa League group stages, and to make even more history by becoming the first Irish team to ever win a group stage game in a European competition. When Shamrock Rovers reached the group stages of the Europa League five years ago they couldn’t even get a single point. While Dundalk have already got four points after two games and even have a real shot at reaching the next round of the tournament.
After scoring the equaliser to get Dundalk’s first point of the group stages Ciaran Kilduff scored the winner against Maccabi to secure Dundalk’s first win and put them in second place in the group two points behind Zenit St Petersburg and three points ahead of AZ Alkmaar.
Tallaght Stadium has become some what of a good luck charm for Dundalk this year having beat BATE Borisov 3-0 there to reach the play off rounds of the Champions League Qualifers. They will be hoping that they get to play their remaining home games there and that they keep up this form that could see them reach the knockout stages.
