Last night Dundalk made Irish footballing history by getting their first point in the Europa League group stages, no Irish team had ever won a point in a European competition group stage before last night. Shamrock Rovers who qualified for the Europa League group stages in 2011 didn’t win a single point, meaning that Dundalk’s draw last night was a sufficient result in Irish football history.
Dundalk’s result was made even more special by the fact that they got the draw away from home against AZ Alkmaar, had been 1-0 down and were down to 10 men before they scored their equaliser. The result will gave them loads of confidence going into their other games and they will feel if they can get a draw away from home against a team that many people would consider superior to them, then why could they not get even more great results.
Other results from the Europa League last night proved that Dundalk had done brilliantly by getting a point. Manchester United lost 1-0 to Feyenoord in Rotterdam while in Milan, Inter lost 2-0 to Hapoel Beer Sheva the team Celtic played in the Champions League Play Off game from Israel.
Southampton won for the first time this season beating Sparta Prague at home 3-0. There were wins also for Schalke, Ajax, Zenit, Villarreal and Sassuolo. Last night might have been a terrible night for some of of the biggest teams in the competition Inter Milan and Manchester United, but for small teams like Dundalk and Sassuolo who have never competed in a major European competition this is a chance of a lifetime.
